12 Vegan beauty products for 2017

Beautiful inside and out. As we embark on a new year and Veganuary (we’re still not too sure about the name), Title Sussex takes a look at vegan beauty products…

It’s been illegal to test finished cosmetics on animals in the UK since 1998, and in March 2013 an EU law was implemented that made selling animal-tested cosmetics in Europe illegal, regardless of where in the world testing on animals has been carried out.

Good news, as many of the products you buy are not manufactured in the UK or Europe. This ban stands not just for finished products, but also ingredients. But that doesn’t mean animals are safe.

Even though companies can’t sell animal-tested products within Europe, they can continue doing animal testing in other continents and sell them in other markets, i.e. China. Something to be aware of when travelling overseas.

The UK’s had laws against cosmetics testing on animals for over 18 years, so it’s unlikely that Brexit would have a big impact on the UK domestic cosmetics market.

However, it could potentially mean that products tested on animals elsewhere in the world might be sold on the UK market again, and this basically boils down to which aspects of EU legislation the UK will decide to keep. Keep your ears to the ground for news on that. It’s unlikely we’ll see animal-tested products on our shelves again, but once we’re out of the EU, that’s no longer necessarily a given.

In the meantime, we’re really liking the swathe of vegan and vegetarian beauty products increasingly hitting our shelves.

We’ve got a great feature coming up soon showcasing the best places to head to in Sussex for cruelty-free treatments and products, but in the meantime here’s a little roundup of some vegan and vegetarian brands and products that we’ve tried and tested for you…
