£30m Madeira Terraces restoration plans revealed

Restoration plans for Brighton’s Madeira Terraces have been unveiled by the city council featuring shops, café’s offices and beach huts under the Victorian terraces, which have been closed since 2013.

After being shut two years ago due to substantial corrosion to the cast iron fixings, the council has released plans to restore and replace the ironwork where necessary in a planned bid to the Department for Communities and Local Government.

If the bid is successful, the plans are expected to cost around £30 million, with money coming from grants, the DCLG and private investment.

“In the 21st century we need something that will help fund the restoration and upkeep of the terraces,” council leader Warren Morgan said.

“We are exploring ways of achieving this with colleagues at Historic England that protects the integrity of the terraces, but also provides new ways of generating income to pay for their restoration and to provide new activity along this important stretch of our city’s coastline.”
