It's Brighton Comedy Week and to celebrate we caught up with comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli
Are you excited for the Brighton Comedy Festival and why?
Who doesn’t love the seaside? I’ve got lots of friends in the town and its a lovely place to be. And you’ve got a MeatLiquor!
What do you enjoy most about being part of a comedy festival?
There’s a sense of community, a feeling that the while town is taking part. That’s a nice feeling. And a lot of friends are around playing or about to play..
What is your show about?
Me and my big mouth! It’s answers are always getting me into trouble.
How did you first get into stand-up comedy?
Fell into it off the back of TV. Always dreamt of doing it but wasn’t sure I was funny enough. Some still believe that….
What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you at a gig?
How long you got? Phones going off, a man realising he was in the wrong room after 45 minutes of a one hour gig. Old school friends showing up and sitting in the front row….
Have you been to Sussex before and if so, what do you enjoy most about coming here?
The town is so close to the country. There’s a more contained vibe in town but also the most beautiful nature so nearby. The food and beer are great.
What is your favourite memory in Sussex?
One of my best friends, Sharon Burgess, was involved in the festival last year. Where and I went for after the gig to Meat Liquor, owned by another friend of mine. It was lovely!
What is your favourite Sussex venue to perform in?
I first played Komedia as a stand up so that’s always going to be special.
Do you prefer watching or performing comedy?
Almost always performing unless it’s Millican, Yusuf Islam or David O’Docherty
What is the worst thing anyone has ever said to you?
Too many to list. I refer you to twitter….
What is your guilty pleasure?
I’m very open about all my pleasure!
What is the most important life lesson you’ve learned?
Be good to folk on the way up; you’re never sure when you’ll meet them on the way down….
Over the years you’ve been doing it, has your attitude towards comedy changed at all and why?
The circuit’s taken a bit of a battering. Folk are more inclined to come out to see acts they know rather than random mixed bills on a Saturday night. This isn’t great for the newcomers
What does the future hold for yourself?
I’m setting up a commune next year….
