Does food affect mood?

We're a nation with a sweet tooth

If sweet and sticky foods make you happy, you’re not alone. A new study by Bupa Care Homes reveals that the nation has a sweet tooth, with the results exploring the true power of our relationship with food and in particular desserts, and how they positively impact our emotional wellbeing. The survey of over 2,000 people revealed that:

  • Almost three quarters of people in the South East felt that food had the ability to boost their mood
  • One third of those in the South East said strawberries and cream was their happy food
  • Almost one third of those in the South East said apple crumble was their go-to comfort food
  • Almost one third said ice cream reminded them of happy childhood memories

The down side to this of course is the burgeoning obesity crisis endemic in the UK, so we wouldn’t advocate extreme sugar gorging by any means. But hey, a little of what you fancy does you good sometimes.
