NEVER TOO SOON FOR BOTOX?

Botox woman health

Let’s face it (pun intended) there’s nothing exactly new about the use of Botox and fillers, but increasingly younger women are using treatments like this at the sign of the slightest crease. Is this wrong?

Not according to Sussex beauty expert Teresa Kis, a trained nurse who has specialised in aesthetic treatments like Botox and fillers for years. “One of the issues I have a lot is women – and men – coming to me in their 50s and 60s and older with deeper lines and wrinkles and imagining I can work miracles,” she says.

“Women – and men – are coming to me in their 50s and 60s, with deeper lines and wrinkles and imagining I can work miracles, but hormones and collagen are depleted, so often it’s too late.”

“The trouble is, by the time you’re that age, hormones are depleted and so is production of collagen, so often by then it’s kind of too late, certainly to achieve the dramatic results they want. I can always help, but I often have to manage their expectations.”

So how do we get around this? Teresa – whilst advocating a natural look – says that prevention is always better than cure. “If people can get on board with this stuff a bit earlier, we can stop those deep lines and grooves forming in the first place,” she explains. “Then, when skin is more mature, we have less to try and fix.”

This might go against natural instinct. Women in their 20s, 30s and 40s could argue that if it ain’t broke, why fix it? But Teresa isn’t suggesting heaps of work. “Just a bit of Botox occasionally, once or twice a year for example, to stop those deep lines forming in the first place,” will help apparently.

But it’s not just about smoothing out faces to combat ageing. “I’m seeing younger and younger women coming to me for one major reason at the moment,” says Teresa. “And it’s because of the volume of makeup they wear.

“By the time they’ve gone overboard with primers, concealers, foundations, powders, blushers, illuminators and whatever else, the skin is caked under a deep layer, and creases form really easily and their wrinkles are really emphasised. I’m not sure it’s great for skin on a daily basis either, clogging pores, so maybe they’re ageing faster? I don’t know.

“One thing I do know for sure is that sagging is on the increase and this is because of leaning down looking at devices all the time, gravity is taking its toll. Jowls are forming earlier, so girls, look up!”

Teresa is an independent nurse prescriber and nurse trainer specialising in aesthetic treatments to help reduce the physical signs of ageing to the face, neck and hands (“people always forget their hands!” she exclaims). She works out of her own clinic in Peacehaven but also visits multiple places around Sussex on to see clients.

She’s really famous for lip fillers, which are one of her biggest hits although her treatment list is impressive. We’ve tested out a few of Teresa’s treatments and she really does know what she’s doing – we haven’t braved the vampire facial yet though!
