This home’s too big for the both of us

With the UK’s housing crisis heating up nearly a third of those in the South East aged 55 or over claim they are considering downsizing their home, according to a survey by YouGov, commissioned by McCarthy & Stone.

With 32% of respondents considering downsizing their existing homes and 15% of those aged 55+ in the South East who have already downsized, it means just under half (47%) of those in the region are potentially, or have already, taken the plunge.

Nigel Sibley, McCarthy & Stone’s Regional Managing Director of the South East said, “The UK is suffering from a chronic undersupply of suitable retirement properties.

To put that in perspective, 3.5 million people in the UK are interested in buying a retirement property, yet only 128,000 have been built.”
