Brighton celebrated as one of the UK’s most sustainable cities

Brighton is officially one of the top five most sustainable cities in the UK, according to Carbon Neutral Group’s recent report.

Carbon Neutral Group have just released their review of the top sustainable cities in the UK, with Brighton placing fifth. This puts Brighton alongside Cambridge, Exeter, Bristol and Edinburgh for the most sustainable UK cities.

Brighton has plenty to be proud of when it comes to sustainability. For starters, the city recently completed its largest sustainable drainage scheme, striving to protect drinking water from roadside pollutants, and to lower flood risk. The beautiful new Wild Park rainscape is part of this effort to prevent water pollution across Brighton, while also adding to the beauty of the local area.

As well as reducing water pollution, Brighton is a strong advocate for reuse and repair schemes. These schemes reduce regional construction, food and water waste. And the reuse doesn’t stop there, with Brighton also being well-known for having a large array of second-hand shops around the city. And as of 2026,  Brighton’s recycling rates have hit an all-time high, reaching 31.6% in the first quarter.
