A new way to be green with freshly launched charity shop gift cards

Three Sussex charities – St Catherine’s, St Wilfrid’s and Martlets – have just launched their brand new charity shop gift cards, in partnership with the Charity Retail Association. These gift cards are available for purchase at The Charity Shop Gift Card.

How the gift card helps

Through customer purchases, charity shops contribute £331million a year to their parent charities. And with each purchase, they save councils £31million a year in waste disposal charges. That’s 339,000 tonnes of textiles diverted away from landfill or incineration.

By introducing gift cards, The Charity Shop Gift Card aims to keep these numbers growing, encouraging sustainability and social responsibility among the people of Sussex. These gift cards are dedicated to second hand shopping. They keep unwanted clothes from going to landfill sites, while providing essential funds for deserving causes.

And the gift cards are all recyclable and compostable. So, you can be doubly sure that your purchase is helping to protect both our planet and our people.

The causes you can support

By purchasing a Charity Shop Gift Card, you can help to support one of three wonderful charities who help care for those with terminal illnesses.

St Catherine’s is an independent charity that offers quality of life to the end of life, and with the bereavement process that follows. They provide physical, spiritual and emotional care for those with life-shortening conditions, as well as their families. You can find stores accepting the gift card in Barnham, Bognor Regis, Chichester, Chidham, East Wittering, Emsworth, Felpham, Midhurst and Selsy.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice is an independent West Sussex based charity. They support those in the last phase of their life, and their loved ones, in a number of ways. This includes physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual support. You can find their shops in Eastbourne, Uckfield, Heathfield, Hailsham, Seaford, and Herstmonceux, for those who wish to help them with this essential support.

Martlets is a charity based in Brighton and Hove, offering support to local and surrounding areas. They  help patients with terminal illnesses and their loved ones experience their final moments together to the fullest extent, making those precious moments count. To support them, you can use the Charity Shop Gift Card in their Brighton, Hove, Peacehaven, Saltdean, and Woodingdean shops.

The good you can do

These gift cards are a way to introduce local communities to the benefits of second hand shopping. And in doing so, they provide essential support to these charities, as well as cheaper alternatives for shoppers. Robert Parker, head of trading for Martlets, said:

“The Charity Shop Gift Card will introduce people to our fantastic shops and to shopping sustainably while supporting a fantastic cause. Martlets, and other charity retailers, also offer a valuable way to counter the effects of the cost-of-living crisis that is affecting so many within our communities – the gift card will help more people access quality affordable items.”

Lee Fellows, co-founder of the new Charity Shop Gift Card, expressed a similar sentiment:

“Each time someone purchases The Charity Shop Gift Card they not only give the gift of thrift, but also contribute towards vital charitable causes. This double benefit is unique to our scheme, and we are delighted that St Catherine’s, St Wilfrid’s and Martlets are onboard, helping people across Sussex gift more sustainably, buy more consciously and support good causes.”
