It is often said that aside from break-ups and losing a loved one, moving is one of the most stressful events we go through in our lifetimes. We’ve got some top tips on how to ease the stresses of moving.

Most of us of have gone through a move, whether it be as a child, moving to a new city to study, or simply moving from rented accommodation to owning your own home.

No matter the experience you have had, it can be hard to avoid some amount of stress with all the organisation and time that goes into a move. If you are relocating home and are already feeling anxious at the prospect of getting everything ready, keep reading.

Get organised

Firstly, leave yourself enough time to get organised for your move, as this will reduce stress greatly. Start packing up your belongings with plenty of time to spare by starting with things that you won’t need to use in the near future.

Make sure to label boxes so you know what is inside each of them as this will make life much easier when it comes to unpacking. If you are downsizing to a smaller property in a dense city you may want to investigate something like storage options in London so that you can keep items safe that you don’t have room for now. Try to avoid purchasing new items until you are in your new home and have a better picture of the space and what you need.

Ask for help

When it comes to moving home, one of the best ways to ease your stresses is to gather some help. This could be family members or friends but either way, an extra set of hands or two will make a huge difference. Just having someone with you on days of packing and moving for a bit of moral support will make all the difference and help to ease some of your stress.

Not only can you hire removal teams to deal with carrying boxes and furniture, but you can also look into professionals who will pack up and organise your belongings into boxes and storage. This could greatly take the stress off your mind if you are worried about time constraints or don’t have many people around to help you.

Create a checklist

With all the stress and chaos of moving it can be easy to forget some of the things you must do. Get started by making a set of checklists detailing everything that must be done in the lead up to the move. Make an initial list with everything that should be started around 6 weeks before your move, for example confirm your moving date, inform landlords and begin to declutter. When you get to around two weeks until the move, create another list so no tasks are forgotten, this could include small details like redirecting mail and setting up Wi-Fi.

Prepare the essentials

After a long few days of moving back and forth, you will be most likely be very relieved to relax and spend the first night in your new home. But by then you may have released you don’t have any of your essentials handy to you! Avoid this mistake by making sure to pack a bag that you will keep in easy reach of things like a change of clothes, toothbrush, cutlery for that first takeaway and a kettle for a relaxing cup of tea.
