If there’s anything that shouts ‘crazy British people’ more loudly than Basil Fawlty, it’s the International Birdman of Bognor event.

For those of you who don’t already know, this is the annual event where brave challengers try their best to build some sort of flying craft and take to the air from the end of the pier. Furthest one’s a winner, or something.

There’s three classes – the one where people generally dress up like lunatics and fully expect to fall from the end without flying at all, a middle class where there is possibility some sort of distance in the air before disaster, and finally the serious ones in what can only be described as converted hang gliders, who actually manage to fly a bit.

Apart from being huge larks and a very silly day out, lots of money is raised for charity. So get involved.
