Great British Beach Clean – where can you help in Sussex?

This weekend, the Great British Beach Clean is taking place, with many events across the county of Sussex.

We’ve done the research so you don’t have to – you just need to turn up, be safe, and get stuck in!

WHY DO WE NEED TO CLEAN OUR BEACHES?

We are all aware of the rising issue of plastic and rubbish in our oceans. This littering contributes heavily to our carbon footprint, but it’s also increasingly fatal to our marine life, animals and plants alike.

And for selfish reasons, who wants to sit on a beach surrounded by litter? No one we know, that’s for sure.

So to help the environment, do something good and preserve nature, check out when your local beach clean is happening below.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Every time you visit the beach, take a spare bag to put your rubbish in, and make sure to put it in the bin when you leave the beach. Failing that, take it back home and dispose of it where you normally would.

If you notice some rubbish, be mindful and pick it up. We know it’s not your fault, but doing your bit can make the world of difference.

Teach your children, friends (and even your parents!) the importance of keeping our beaches clean.

Attend as many beach cleanups as you can, you’d be surprised at how much difference it can make.

HOW TO STAY SAFE

Wear appropriate attire to keep safe. Chances are there will be some broken glass around, so it’s important to look after yourself. Wear thick, rubber gloves, and wear wellies or strong boots.

Make sure you stay hydrated with plenty of water, and apply suncream before and during the beach clean to avoid sunburn!

Stay safe near the sea, watch your footing and keep an eye on members of your group who are more vulnerable.
