Walking in the dark for a brighter future

The Seafront Torch Walk takes place this month as part of Earth Hour

The seventh annual Seafront Torch Walk is set to take place on Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm to raise awareness of climate change.

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Healthwalks team will be taking part in World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF’s) Earth Hour by joining with WWF supporters, regular healthwalkers and local residents for the mile walk along the seafront.

In the past nine years, Earth Hour has grown from a symbolic ‘turn off your lights’ event in Sydney, Australia, to the world’s largest open-sourced environmental campaign. Earth Hour mobilises hundreds of millions of people in more than 7,000 cities and 162 countries and territories to use less or no power for one hour and to take part in campaigning activities.

In Brighton & Hove, the Seafront Torch Walk is an event designed for all the family. Organisers have issued a reminder that it can be cold and dark, so are urging people to bring a torch or LED lantern and to wrap up warm!

The Maracatu samba band is returning to the Seafront Torch Walk to boost morale with their uplifting Latin rhythms as walkers travel along from the Bandstand to Brighton Pier.

Cllr Geoffrey Bowden said: “Last year was the warmest year on record. Climate change is a growing a growing threat to all of us living on our increasingly fragile planet. The Seafront Torch Walk, which locally is being organised by the council’s Healthwalks’ team, is part of a global WWF campaign linking people around the world who want to protect the earth for future generations.”
