10 of the most memorable Hunger Games moments
Rhys Wilson-Plant gives us his top moments from the Hunger Games franchise
Millions of people around the world consider the Hunger Games franchise as one of the best in recent years, but like all good things, it must come to an end.
The Hunger Games world is set in a dystopian future, where a totalitarian nation, Panem, is divided into twelve districts. Each year, the authority holds a Hunger Game, where a male and female member from each district must represent them to remind them of their uprising years before. The aim of the game? To win you must be the last man or woman standing.
To give proper farewell to the franchise, we have devised a list of the top 10 moments from the films.
- Katniss shoots an arrow at the Gamemakers – The Hunger Games (2012)
We start the list with a classic from the first film. After desperately trying to improve her fighting skills in the training sessions, Katniss shows her frustration with the arrogant totalitarian authority by shooting an arrow at them. From this moment, we knew not to mess with Katniss.
- When Katniss sings ‘The Hanging Tree’ – Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1
A great folk song that ended up making us hum the tune as we left the theatres. This simple tune would later became a song that unified the rebels.
- When Peeta tells Katniss that he doesn’t want to forget what happened in the arena – Hunger Games (2012)
What an adorable moment, Katniss suggests that they should forget what happened in the arena to move forward, but Peeta tells her he doesn’t want to forget what they shared.
- When Peeta and Katniss nearly committed suicide by nightlock berries – The Hunger Games (2012)
At first, there being a relationship between these two felt unlikely, but after relying on each other, they soon realise they can’t live without each other. To show Panem they are not in control, Peeta demonstrates that they don’t own him, which results in the game makers letting them both live.
- Old man is executed for whistling Rue’s tune – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
From this moment the films start to become a revolute against Panem’s old ways of control and exploitation. The murder sparks mass riots where districts are flattened, people made homeless and those who are deemed threatening to the regime, killed. The war has officially begun.
- Peeta admitting his feelings for Katniss on the Flickerman show – Hunger Games (2012)
Who can forget the Flickerman show? A show that made The Graham Norton Show seem like an episode of Panorama. This revelation was a shock to the audience and it was the start of what would become a loving and complicated relationship!
- “If we burn, you burn with us” – Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)
Katniss isn’t the type of girl who is comfortable in front of a camera, but after taking down a plane with her bow following the bombing of a rebel hospital full of injured people, she gives a blunt and angered statement to Panem’s government.
- Peeta attacks Katniss – The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)
Maybe it was me, but would have you gone into that locked hospital room with Peeta looking like that? Hell no. Nevertheless love blinds us does it not? Peeta nearly takes Katniss’ life by strangling her before a solider intervenes.
- Rue dies – Hunger Games (2012)
Without a doubt one of the saddest moments in the franchise. After protecting the horrifyingly young Rue against assailants, Rue dies and is put to rest and honoured by Katniss who won’t let the games destroy who she is.
- “I volunteer as tribute” – Hunger Games (2012)
Growing up as a mother to her younger sister, she volunteers as tribute to save her sister’s life courageously. Despite the ghastly living conditions, Katniss still has a strong moral compass and this is her strongest weapon against the government throughout the franchise.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay: Part 2 is out in theatres now.
