A new, fully-inclusive fun club night is coming to Sussex. Meet Charlene, the woman behind Disco Tits

Disco Tits was born in 2022 when Charlene (aka Charlene from Neighbours) came home from Brighton & Hove Pride and wanted to post a DJ mix that helped prolong the amazing feeling.

Without including “anything too bangin’,” she posted her mix, entitled ‘Disco Tits,’ which has since grown to be a regular two-hour weekly show on Club Ready Radio.

The road to Disco Tits

Charlene gets to broadcast to listeners all around the world now, but without a professional background in music, it wasn’t until lockdown that she stepped into the world of DJ-ing.

Previously, Charlene had worked in admin, childcare, and hairdressing. “The creative jobs were what kept my brain ticking over, while the admin paid my bills,” she said.

“The creative jobs were what kept my brain ticking over, while the admin paid my bills,”

Lockdown pushed Charlene to buy herself a beginner’s set-up. With two children at home, it was difficult for Charlene to advance, even with this.

She signed up to a course with Club Ready DJ School, which helped her begin mixing, at the age of 38.

Charlene built an online diary, posting her progress on SoundCloud, and sharing on DJ forums and Facebook pages to promote her mixes.

Christmas 2022, Charlene saw an ad for slots on Club Ready Radio. “I applied and was told that I had it. Mid Jan of 2023, I then had my own two-hour slot every week where I hosted Disco Tits.” The radio show led Charlene to her first live gigs.

Joining the DJ community

“I get imposter syndrome really badly, and I am quick to criticise myself. I also worried that people wouldn’t take me seriously.” Charlene shared.

Luckily, the DJ community has been incredibly supportive towards Charlene and her Disco Tits show.

“I get imposter syndrome really badly, and I am quick to criticise myself. I also worried that people wouldn’t take me seriously.”

“I have had nothing but support from the other DJs around me, and feel very lucky to have so many peers have my back. It is scary changing your career because you hope that it’s worth it and you hope you are good!”

Upon realising Charlene had regular listeners tuning into her DJ sets on Club Ready Radio, it solidified that doing music as a career was the right move.

“It felt euphoric that I was doing this thing that made me so happy and other people were enjoying it too. My first live gig was literally mental, and I had so much support and praise from other DJs that I realised that this was it. This is definitely what I am going to be doing because it isn’t just me loving it, everyone else is too,” she said.

Being a mum DJ

Charlene feels that finally having a career revolved around music is the missing puzzle piece in her life. Music is part of her family life too, having regular dance parties with her children of three and six years old. Although being a DJ mum has its difficulties.

“I recently went away for a DJ gig, my daughter, six-years-old, was upset. Thinking it was because I was going away, I asked her what was the matter. She was upset I was going somewhere ‘grown-up’ where she couldn’t come watch. She loves watching me do my thing because she sees how happy it makes me” Charlene told us.

“The most important thing is to follow your passion. It doesn’t even have to start big”

Although her daughter can’t come and watch yet, ultimately becoming a DJ in her thirties means Charlene can teach her children that they can do whatever they want, at any age.

“The most important thing is to follow your passion. It doesn’t even have to start big, just integrate whatever your passion is into your life and the rest will happen” She shares.

Reaching out to online communities provided much support to Charlene when she was starting ‘Disco Tits’ and she encourages other mums who might be feeling lost or trapped to do the same for their passions.

“Motherhood can feel really lonely at times and it’s good to make connections with other people with the same passions as you,” Charlene said.

After opening up for FML Ireland’s club debut near Dublin, Charlene is bringing Disco Tits to Worthing on Friday 5 May. She’s excited to get her teeth into running her own nights here in the heart of Sussex.

The club night is set to debut at Vault, in Worthing. It’s an intimate venue where Charlene hopes to welcome people from all walks of life, with the aim of just having a good night!

“Worthing has really taken a big step forward in the last year with improving its bars and clubs. It seems the perfect town to debut Disco Tits”

Charlene says, “Around Brighton and Hove, there are lots of club nights with tech house, techno and other banging genres which is amazing! And I love all that… But I’d really love to see funky disco vibes come back with a bang. Worthing has really taken a big step forward in the last year with improving its bars and clubs. It seems the perfect town to debut Disco Tits”.

Covering disco, nu-disco, house and funky house, you can expect to hear uplifting music from a hand-picked line-up of DJs from across the UK.

DJs featured in the debut line-up have a vast array of experience playing in clubs around Europe and various radio stations and are all excited to bring Disco Tits to life. Tickets are available for the club night online.
