West Sussex school scoops first prize

St Anthony’s School pupils crowned ‘consumer champions’

A West Sussex School has made the finals of a national competition about consumer rights.

Four pupils from St Anthony’s School in Chichester proved themselves local ‘consumer champions’ when they were crowned winners of the regional heat in Worthing earlier this month.

And for Year 10 students Ewan Grant-Richardson, Zac Knight, Mia Bardoe and Karen Page, the next step will be to represent West Sussex at the national event in Bournemouth during the week commencing Monday 29 June 2015.

The Trading Standards Institute Consumer Challenge Quiz, which has been running for 17 years, is aimed at teaching pupils who attend special schools consumer rights – with over 40 children taking part.

The competition is designed to test the children’s knowledge and understanding of topics such as food and drink, personal safety and health issues.

Helen Ball, head teacher at St Anthony’s Special School, said: “The school has participated in the Consumer Challenge Quiz for a number of years and our students look forward to the event and developing their own consumer knowledge.

“We are very proud of their achievement this year in winning the regional competition and I am sure they will represent the region fantastically in the national final in Bournemouth.”

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents Services with responsibility for Trading Standards, said: “We are very proud of what these pupils have achieved from St Anthony’s.

“The Consumer Challenge Quiz is a great way of teaching children with special educational needs about consumer issues that may affect them.

“We are very excited to see how they will get on in the national event in June.”
